Pots of Inspiration!

My son, Agastya, is 5 years old and has been a part of ShrotaHouse for over 6 months. He was first introduced to musical instruments through the Color and Learn With Little Bajo book of ShrotaHouse. He loved scanning and listening to the instruments and soon he was able to recognize all the instruments’ sounds.

Recently we were driving back from Mysore, enroute we stopped at a store that had lots of clay utensils. I told Agastya we need to get a pot so we can cook our food in it. The large industrial shed-like store had a variety of clay pots and pans. Agastya got particularly attracted to the pots and said “Mumma, I want this pot, it is a Ghantam“.

“Mumma, I want this pot!” -Little Agastya

He then started playing on it and the shopkeeper was in complete disbelief and made sure he put it back. I too told him this is for cooking and not a Ghatam, but he kept insisting on wanting to take it home. We were in a hurry and decided to take it home with us.

“Agastya is a very musical child. His interest and grasp of sounds of musical instruments is beyond the ordinary” -Madhumita Bhaskar

Watch little Agastya play with his newfound clay pot! Doesn’t he seem a natural -all of five!

He came home and learnt it was called “Ghatam” and played the instrument trying to extract different sounds from it. He also discovered the higher and lower pitch sounds on it.
